Cute, comfy and overwhelmingly unique, all heads will turn when you wear Julie’s Scrappy Sweater. This classic garment allows you to reuse all of your scraps to create your own personal masterpiece. This pattern was inspired by a very close friend of mine (you guessed it, her name is Julie) who absolutely loved the fit of the Chérie Blossom Pullover and wanted a similar style that used all of my yarn scraps. That simple request was the beginning of the creation of this design.

Julie’s Scrappy Sweater is oversized (with a positive ease of 2.5-5 cm (1-2”) and worked from the top-down and is perfect all year-round. She is knit flat to work a true garter stitch with the occasional Cartridge Belt Rib Stitch for the collar, the frontal opening and ribbing on the sleeves as well as the bottom of the body. This pattern is written especially for beginner-knitters who want to make their first garment, but is great for all levels.

Julie’s Scrappy Sweater has it all – detailed written instructions, video tutorials, tips and advice are pointed out throughout the pattern to help you through. The goal is for your knitting experience to be pleasant and the pattern is written in such a way for that goal to be achieved!

What makes this pattern unique?
• A top-down construction, with 2-stitch raglans.
• A long collar.
• A v-neck opening.
• The ribbing used for the collar, the frontal opening, the cuffs and body ribbing is atypical… have you ever heard of the Cartridge Belt Rib Stitch?
• The majority of the knit is worked in garter stitch.
• Because of the Garter Stitch and the Cartridge Belt Rib Stitch, there is barely any purling involved in this knit!
• The body has slits on both sides of the body.

What will you need?
• A measuring tape.
• Option 1: 6 mm (US 10) interchangeable circular needles with an 80 cm (32 in) cord, and 2 extra cables/cords or scrap yarn which will be used as placeholders.
OR
• Option 2: 2 sets of 6 mm (US 10) fixed circular needles with an 80 cm (32 in) cord, and 2 extra cables/cords or scrap yarn which will be used as placeholders.
• 10 stitch markers.
• A darning needle.
• A third needle (one circular needle counts as 2 needles), preferably 6 mm (US 8) or smaller for a 3-needle bind off.
• Optional: Clasps and/or buttons, along with a sewing needle and thread.

What about yarn and gauge?
I recommend using two strands of Sport/DK/Light Worsted-weight yarn in 100% cotton. This pattern is great for using all of those scrap yarns you may have laying around! Please note that the use of other fibers may strongly impact the final measurements of your garment.

Of course, you may use whatever you’d like, as long as it meets gauge. Depending on your chest size, you may need different quantities of each yarn. You will find this information on the next page.

The gauge for this pattern is 14 sts x 18 rows for 10 cm x 10 cm (4 in x 4 in) – blocked. Make your swatch in garter stitch, flat. I highly recommend that you make your swatch as big as possible, to replicate the weight of the garment. It is very common to have different gauge in a small swatch vs. the full garment, and this may also change the final measurements of your garment. Ensuring that you have the correct gauge is very important so that the garment fits perfectly!
