Pattern Details
Skill Level: Easy
Crochet Terminology: US Terms
Yarn Weight: Bulky (#5)
Recommended Yarn: Lion Brand Hue + Me
Hook Size: 6.5 mm (US K/10.5)
The head and body are crocheted in one continuous piece, reducing the amount of sewing required. The beard, nose, hands, and oversized floppy hat are made separately and attached during assembly.
The hat features a ribbed brim and a long, slouchy shape that gives each gnome its adorable personality.
The pattern uses basic crochet stitches, including single crochet, double crochet, increases, decreases, and working in the back loop only.
Yarn Requirements
The original gnomes were made using Lion Brand Hue + Me (80% Acrylic / 20% Wool, 125 g / 137 yds per skein).
Small Gnome:
Medium Grey: 90 g
Green: 175 g
Beige: 10 g
Cream: 60 g
Medium Gnome:
Light Grey: 320 g
Green: 235 g
Beige: 10 g
Cream: 50 g
Large Gnome:
Dark Grey: 430 g
Red: 290 g
Beige: 10 g
Cream: 85 g
You can substitute another yarn of similar thickness or experiment with different yarn weights to make your gnome bigger or smaller. Keep in mind that yarn substitutions may affect the finished measurements and yarn requirements.
Additional Materials
6.5 mm crochet hook
Polyester fiberfill
Tapestry needle
Scissors
Stitch marker
Optional poly pellets or other suitable weighted filling
Small fabric pouch for the weighted filling
Adding weight to the bottom of your gnome is optional but can help it stand upright and make it more stable as a home decoration.
Weighted gnomes are intended for decorative use rather than as toys for young children.
One Pattern, Endless Possibilities
One of my favorite things about this Jumbo Gnome pattern is how easily you can customize it for different seasons and holidays.
Choose neutral or natural yarn colors to create a timeless farmhouse gnome that looks beautiful all year round.
Then, simply add seasonal decorations to the hat to give your gnome a completely different look.
Easter Gnome: Add crochet bunny ears, pastel flowers, or little Easter eggs.
Fall Gnome: Decorate the hat with autumn leaves, pumpkins, or acorns.
Christmas Gnome: Use festive colors and add snowflakes, holly, or other Christmas decorations.
Spring and Summer Gnome: Add daisies, sunflowers, or other colorful crochet flowers.
You can also customize the height of your gnome by adding or removing rounds without increases or decreases. Make the body taller, create an extra-long floppy hat, or adjust the proportions to suit your style.
One basic gnome pattern can become a beautiful decoration for every season!
