Designer Notes

This square is my first fully original design, created with deep reverence for Juneteenth and everything it represents. While this isn’t my history, it’s a story I’m learning to hold space for—with respect, with humility, and with a commitment to listen and keep learning.

Juneteenth marks the delayed emancipation of enslaved Black Americans, and its legacy is one of strength, survival, and celebration in the face of injustice. I wasn’t taught this history properly, but I’m working to change that—by engaging with the work of Black creators, historians, and artists who have generously shared their stories.

The design was entirely freehanded. I shaped the arc to mirror the rising red stripe from the Juneteenth flag, symbolizing a new dawn. Above it sits the field of blue, and at its center, a white five-pointed star encircled by a twelve-point radiance. Every stitch was made with intention—to honor a legacy of freedom long denied, and to reflect the light that still rises from it.

This piece is part of my Fiberpunk series, a year-long daily project where I use crochet as a form of resistance, remembrance, and radical reflection.
