Kahlua is a cozy cardigan with bold lines that combines simple texture, a bit (a bunch?) of ribbing, and some chunky cables. The construction gives you the perfect amount of slouch, on a gorgeous shoulder = and it’s all knit up in a gorgeous, squishy farm yarn.

The knitting on this design is super easy, but it’s how the different elements are paired and shaped together that makes the Kahlua special. These beautiful horizontal patterns flow into one another and then curve around the back neckline. The chunky cable at each side is a fun surprise, and it balances all those lines perfectly, and all the shaping and hem/cuff detail is intentional and crisp as well.

Kahlua was designed to showcase the lovely halo and creamy shade of stunning Hinterland Range yarn, from BC Canada. Range is a wonderfully soft, round fiber with just a touch of drape to it, made from 50% Alpaca from Hinterland’s own farm and 50% Canadian Rambouillet wool, sourced up in Canada as well. It’s a true farm yarn, so quantities are limited each year - keep your eyes out for when Range is up for sale! It’s worth the wait.

A short length and a boxy fit make this easy to wear with lots of options, and it’s designed so you can modify for length or width if desired. Notes on making alterations so your cardigan fits as desired are in the pattern.

Construction:
Kahlua is worked from the bottom up. The body is worked flat from hem to armhole and sleeves are knit separately in the round from cuff to upper sleeve. Pieces are then joined at the yoke and shaped seamlessly to shoulders. Once the body is complete, front sections are continued over the shoulders and joined at center back to create the curved section you see at back. The ribbed collar is picked up and worked last.

Measurements reflect circumference around bust, worn closed and are based on final blocked fabric. For the fit shown, I suggest choosing a size that allows for about 4-6”/10-15.25cm positive ease, based on your actual bust.

Hinterland Range is a farm yarn, and therefore supply is limited. If looking for a substitute yarn, a heavy worsted to Aran weight farm yarn with a touch of alpaca, mohair, or silk would give you a similar halo. You could alternatively combine a DK with a lace strand of mohair or silk to acheive the same effect. Kahlua can also be knit without the halo at all in a wool or wool blend that works to gauge. I do suggest a solid, tweed, or subtle heather so that the detail here shows up well.
