This lace hat is named Kanstell, which means basket in Cornish. This hat perfectly matches the Kostenn cowl pattern.

Skill Level
This is a beginner-intermediate pattern, and is a quick knit with an easily memorable pattern.
Testers have commented that this is a great ‘mindless’ project.

This pattern is fully charted and written (English), and tally boxes are provided in the written pattern to keep track of rounds.

An annotated version is provided, in which each size is marked with a different color. This may be easier for some to read, but if printing, it may be best to annotate the original yourself.

Gauge

20 stitches and 26 rows in 4 inches (10cm) plain stockinette on larger needles, or
16 sts = 3” (7.62cm), 16 rounds = 2.5” (6.35cm) in body pattern on larger needles

  • Preemie: 9”-12” around, 4.25” tall (22.5-30.5cm around, 10.5cm tall)
  • Newborn S: 10.5”-14” around, 5.5” tall (26.5-35.5cm around, 14cm tall)

  • 6mo: 13.5”-18” around, 6.125” tall (35.5-45.5cm around, 15.5cm tall)

Circumfrence measurements are completely unstretched - completely stretched. For complete measurements, see chart (included in images and in downloads).
Height also stretches a decent amount, so this hat is quite forgiving and one size may fit a size up and a size down. Sizing assumes accurate gauge. Size up if you have a tight gauge, size down if you have a loose gauge.

Fit
Fitted to slouchy depending on size and ribbing length (if long ribbing is left unfolded).

Ribbing
Both short and long ribbing options are given. Long ribbing can be worn long (which makes the hat slouchier) or folded (for the same fit as short ribbing).

Needles - size 5 and size 8 us (3.75mm and 5mm, respectively) OR any size that gets the correct small gauge and a size 2-4 sizes larger.

Yarn
30-215 yards (27.5-196.5m) worsted weight yarn depending on size, fit, and ribbing length. See chart (in pictures and downloads) for total yardage estimates for all sizes, ribbing lengths, and fits.

This pattern works best with solid colors or subtle variegations, stripes or highly contrastive variegations will distract from the patterning. A second color can be used for the ribbing, in which case 15-65 yards (13.7-59.5m) may be used for ribbing depending on size and ribbing length.

  • I used about 135 yards (123.5m) total in Deborah Norville color Fluorescent Yellow and Caron Simply Soft color Grey Heather for the Adult L, short ribbing.
  • I used about 58 yards (53m) total in Caron Simply Soft colors Limelight and Grey Heather for the Newborn L, short ribbing.
