Karuna is a choose-your-own-adventure texture and lace triangle. The shawl begins with a zigzagging knit & purl pattern which transitions into one of Naomi Parkhurst’s elegant laces, which can be made to either ripple, echoing the zigzags of part 1, or to make flowing diamonds that echo the start of the shawl.

Each part of the pattern can be worked to any size, or until the yarn runs out. The design suits lace to sport weight yarn, of solid, semi solid, or gradient.

The shawl’s name comes from the Sanskrit word for kindness, in the hope that in the knitting, we can each of us find more space for kindness.

  • Yardage requirements are flexible, 300m will make a small shawl, 1000m a much larger one.

  • The design can be worked entirely from the written pattern, or from charts with some notes.
