Plaid flannel jackets are recognizable icons of the Canadian back country. I borrowed the classic Buffalo Check and worked it up into a simple toque. The name “Kenora” comes from a town in Northwestern Ontario, nestled in the thick forest of the Canadian Shield, on the shore of beautiful Lake of the Woods. It’s one of my favourite places in the world and holds a lot of fond memories of childhood vacations.

The colours are worked using the “mosaic knitting” technique. You don’t need to be skilled at fair isle or any other colourwork to do this. One colour is worked on each round while contrast colour stitches are slipped and worked on the following round. Yarn is held in front while slipping to give a real, woven check look.
