From my notebook…

I wanted to create a light, airy shawl inspired by something I enjoy: spring rain. The soft patter of raindrops is so soothing, and it makes for such beautiful flowers. The name is Finnish for “spring rain” of course, and I checked with a friend of mine from Finland to make sure that was the best translation. It’s pronounced KEH-vaht-saw-day (hope that is accurate enough for ya).

When creating the design, I chose colorways and textures that harmonize with one another to express the imagery I had in mind. For the garter section, I went with an almost-white color to be the clouds. Next, a blueish color for the eyelet raindrops in the main section. Then I decided to insert another garter section between the blue and the border to provide contrast between the blue and pink. It makes me think of the mist that often accompanies the rain in the spring. I went with a pinkish color for the border and designed it to look like petals.

I chose Quince & Co. Chickadee for this project because it’s light and squishy, plus their palette was so perfect for the soft colors I had in mind. And, of course, because it’s 100% American made.
