On traditional gansey sweaters from many different places, horizontal texture stitches cover most of the sweater body as well as part of the sleeves. We’ve designed four variations on this basic theme, all with simple stitches that are easy enough for beginning knitters but have enough interest to keep more advanced knitters from getting bored. Because these are traditional sweaters that were knit without patterns, instead of creating a pattern with line-by-line instructions for six or seven different sizes all using identical stitches, we’ve created a recipe you can use to make your own one-of-a-kind garment. You may be surprised to discover that you find working up a sweater this way is easier than following a detailed pattern.
