Keyboard Beanie
Keyboard Beanie is a double-layer beanie that begins with its own piano keyboard. The brim features octaves knitted in black-and-white two-color jacquard, worked from a provisional cast-on so the hat grows in both directions from the brim: one side continues with the main color (MC) for the upper body and crown, the other side picks up the cast-on edge and continues with the contrast color (CC) for the lower body and crown. Both crowns are closed, and the finished hat folds along the jacquard into a plush, double-layer brim. Because the body is worked in two freely chosen colors, you can personalize your own colorway — and a blank brim chart is included at the end of the pattern so you can design your own keyboard (or any motif you like) and fine-tune the circumference.
The double layer of cashmere makes the hat thick, elastic and incredibly warm — every stitch is worth it. Wear it folded tall for a chunky watch-cap look, or fold it less for a slouchier fit.
Sizes
Kids (S) {Adult Small (M)} Adult Large (L)
Hat circumference: 51 {56} 59 cm (measured at the jacquard brim)
Hat depth (folded): 26 {29} 31.5 cm
To fit head circumference: 49–52 {54–57} 57–60 cm
Ease: designed with approx. −1 to +2 cm of ease at the brim. The jacquard band is knitted firmly and the double-layer brim grips the head, so the hat sits snugly without pinching.
Gauge (after wet blocking)
Stocking stitch, 3.25 mm needle: 26 sts × 37 rows = 10 × 10 cm
Jacquard colorwork, 3.5 mm needle: 25 sts × 34 rows = 10 × 10 cm
Take time to check your gauge — the fabric is knitted firmly and densely on purpose, which gives the double-layer hat its structure.
Yarn
Lace-weight cashmere (325 m / 50 g), held double throughout.
MC (upper body & crown): 60 {65} 70 g
CC (lower body & crown): 45 {50} 55 g
Black (brim jacquard): 7 {8} 9 g
White (brim jacquard): 7 {8} 9 g
Sample used: JIUSELU (九色鹿) Kaimi Cashmere, 100% cashmere, 325 m / 50 g — 1 ball each of black and white, plus 2 balls MC and 1–2 balls CC of your chosen colors.
Needles & Notions
3.25 mm circular needle, 60 cm cord — stocking stitch sections
3.5 mm circular needle, 60 cm cord — jacquard brim
3.0 mm crochet hook and waste yarn for the provisional cast-on (Judy’s Magic Cast On also works)
6 stitch markers (including BOR)
Tapestry needle
Skills & Techniques
Provisional crochet-chain cast-on, jogless join, lifted increases (M1L), SKP and K2tog decreases, crown gathering, and two-color jacquard worked from charts. The body is single-color stocking stitch; only the brim is worked in two-color jacquard. Suitable for an intermediate knitter.
Notes
The hat is worked in the round from the brim outwards in both directions; no seaming.
Section heights: C (upper crown) 7.5 {8.5} 9 cm · B (upper body) 18.5 {20.5} 22.5 cm · A (brim) 6.5 cm · B’ (lower body) 12 {14} 16 cm · C’ (lower crown) = C.
The brim folds outward cleanly because the upper body height equals the brim + lower body height (B = A + B’).
