Kimberly Working Shawl
2017 Sunshine Charlotte Shawl CAL

A friend of mine showed me some European shawls called working shawls, with very short back and longer sides that could be tied so working women could wear shawls without losing them. I loved the idea, and who works more diligently than my mother? So I dedicated this working shawl to her for Mothers’ Day.

The base of the shawl is worked in short rows with an increase every fourth row. You’ll add the shoulder straps to the top of the shawl base, and then you’ll work a ribbed edging around the entire shawl. While this shawl uses few stitches, it suits an advanced beginner or early intermediate crocheter because of the increases, decreases, and fptr/bptr to create the ribbing.

The Kimberly Shawl is the May installment of the 2017 Sunshine Charlotte Designs Crochet ALong, which features a different shawl pattern each month. This year’s CAL projects are meant to be donated to a local children’s hospital - specifically a cancer ward - so they can be handed out to mothers who suffer the pain of watching their child be ill. I design and donate these shawls in memory of my daughter Charlotte, who died of brain cancer in July 2015.
