The Kinbane Castle Pattern set has three patterns within it:

  • A Shawl - with instructions for DK and 4 ply
  • A Cowlette - with instructions for DK and 4 ply
  • Socks - 4-ply in sizes small (7) / medium (8) / large (9) / x-large (10)

Kinbane is a historical castle here in Northern Ireland, built in 1547, that is sitting on a limestone headland. We visited this castle for the first this Easter (2025), hence the name of the pattern. I wanted this pattern to be reversible, squishy, have a 3-stitch i-cord edge (shawl and cowlette) and suitable for busy and plain yarns.

The Shawl
The shawl is a crescent shaped shawl that is knit as one piece from tip to tip and the pattern helps you manage your yarn to get the most out of what you have.

DK version
Measured: 74”/186cm x 10”/25.5cm and I used 2 x 100g skeins of DK 225m/100g
Gauge: 30sts x 26 rows using 4mm needles, in pattern

4-ply version
Measured: 68”/173cm x 9”/23cm and I used 100g of 4-ply 400m/100g
Gauge: 36sts x 38 rows using 3.25mm needles, in pattern

The Cowlette
The Cowlette is a triangular shaped cowl that is knit flat and seamed at the back to finish.

DK version
Measured: 23.5”/60cm x 8.5”/22cm x 23”/58cm and I used 160g of DK 225m/100g
Gauge: 30sts x 26 rows using 4mm needles, in pattern

4-ply version
Measured: 23.5”/60cm x 8.5”/22cm x 23”/58cm and I used 100g of 4-ply 470m/100g
Gauge: 36sts x 38 rows using 3.25mm needles, in pattern

The Socks
The Kinbane Socks are knit from cuff to toe and have a heel, flap and gusset

Knit in 4-ply yarn (425m/100g) and the gauge is 36sts x 40 rows on 2.25mm needles

I will create projects for each of the samples I knit with more details on yarn and exact meterage/yardage used.

When you buy the pattern there is the full pattern and then for the shawl and cowlette, two additional files which are for printing either the written or charted instructions (without pattern photos etc). For the socks there is a full version and a print version (should you want to save some paper).
