The Kinvara Shawl is named for the tiny townland of the same name in County Galway. In Irish, Kinvara means ‘head of the sea’. Lace travels down the spine of this shawl, flowing back and forth as if it’s following the shifting tidal currents of the Wild Atlantic Coast. The lace ebbs and flows throughout the shawl, cascading in uniform rows within the body and in unexpected ways through the spine.
The Wild Atlantic coast is full of shallow, rocky inlets and shifting tidal flats: at low tide, you get exposed “rivers” of water, channels and pools; at high tide, everything is smooth, flooded and deceptively simple.

This shawl balances lace and stockinette, creating the perfect mix of focus you can sink into, as well as rows you can zoom right through.

Written in one size, this classic DK-weight triangle—with both written and charted directions—is perfect for an intermediate but interesting enough to keep advanced knitters happily engaged.

Needle:
US 9 (5.5 mm), 40” (100 cm) circular needle or needles needed to get gauge

Suggested Yarn: Camellia Fiber Co., Serene Merino DK, DK, 4 skeins, 100% Merino; 218 yds (200 m)/ 100 g or any DK weight yarn of your choosing

Sample uses: Garden Rose, approx. 860 yds (797 m)

Gauge: 16.5 stitches/23 rows = 4” (10 cm) square in texture from Body Section using US 9 (5.5 mm) needles or whatever size needle gives you the fabric you would like.

Other Notions: 4 stitch markers for edges and center stitches, 12 stitch markers for lace (optional but suggested to make things easier), darning needle
