The crisp, eye-catching “kirei” (clean, beautiful) cables of this bag are fun to work and are the focus of this interesting intermediate–to-advanced project. The small size is perfect for wearing across the body as you shop and large enough to hold the essentials.

  • You’ll need 150-170 yds of worsted weight yarn to complete the bag with the cable pattern on one side, including the knitted handle. I like to use 100% cotton for a summer bag or 100% wool for a fall or winter bag.
  • Use a purchased handle, or knit the twisted I-cord handle for a completely hand knit project!
  • One (1”) button is required for closure -OR- follow the included instructions for making a click closure! For the click closure you will need some metal measuring tape and additional fingering weight yarn to make the facing. See the included animation.
  • The cabled pattern can be worked on one side of the bag as shown, or can be worked on both sides (extra yarn required).
  • Choose one of the 4 provided charts.

Instructions are provided to work the cables without the use of a cable needle, and I highly recommend this method, due to the large number of stitch shifts that occurs in the cable designs.

This is a great pattern for intermediate to advanced knitters who want to experience the freedom that comes from working knitted cables without a cable needle. Once you try it, you’ll never go back!
