Kluane National Park – high in the mountains of southwest Yukon – is a land of extremes. The park is home to Canada’s highest peak (5,959-metre Mount Logan), its largest ice field and North America’s most genetically diverse grizzly population. Day hikes offer unforgettable vistas and cozy nights in the lodges around Kathleen Lake, or take a flightseeing tour to the Icefield Discovery basecamp and spend a few hours or a few days exploring the park’s frozen interior.

The Kluane Gaiters are essential cold weather accessories, whether you are adventuring to Kluane itself, or hiking around your own neighbourhood. Designed to hug your calves with warm, sturdy knitting that falls over the tops of your boots, the gaiters will keep out drifting snow and the insistent fingers of glacial winds. Latvian braids and corrugated ribbing add interest to a simple design, and the recommended dense gauge makes these gaiters durable and warm. The gaiters are available in one size (to fit a 15” calf) but are easy to customize using the directions included.

The instructions are fully written; the colourwork cuffs are additionally charted.

Materials Needed:

  • @356y aran weight yarn main colour
  • @159y aran weight yarn contrast colour
  • 4mm (US 6) needles or size needed to make gauge appropriate for knitting in the round

Optional Materials:

  • marker for start/end of round

Gauge:
- 22 sts x 24 rounds = 4” in corrugated ribbing worked in the round

Note that to achieve the expected fit, the stitch gauge of the corrugated ribbing is the most important gauge to match.
