Julije Knifer (1924 –2004) was a Croatian painter and founding member of the prominent 60s Croatian art group known as, Gorgona Group.

Between 1959 and 1960 Julije Knifer defined the basic
elements of his works by reducing his pictorial means
merely to black on white and the form of the
meander; he has remained faithful to these ever since.

“My goal was to find a form of the anti-painting
with the minimum of means
with maximal contrasts
to achieve a monotonous rhythm.”
