Knitted Cloud or Cache-Nez
The Young Ladies Book: A Manual of Amusements, Exercises, Studies, and Pursuits, edited by Mrs. Henry (Matilda Anne Planche) Mackarness, 1888, published in London.
Available through Google book search on page 180.
The pattern calls for Shetland yarn and H. Walker’s ivory pins No. 5. As it is an English book, and after perusing pins/needles suggested for baby shoes and a sock pattern in the book, I think it safe to assume vintage UK needle sizes are being used--if so 5.5 mm/US9 is the modern equivalent. However, as always needles and yarn should be chosen at the discretion of the knitter to achieve the look desired!
