Summary: Large garter stitch shawl, designed to be knit with a variety of yarns. Instructions include formula for customizing size.

Note: Pattern requires a circular needle size US 7 in 24” or 32” length.

From the book: “This garment is knitted in garter stitch from side edge to side edge and is reversible. The fringes are made at the beginning and end of each row. The collar is worked last and gives this ruana a special fit. Traditional woven ruanas have a V opening at the back of the neck. This V leaves the back of your neck exposed to the wind and the point of the V is a stress point on the garment. Finishing the ruana with a collar reinforces the back for better wear and keeps the neck covered and cozy… .

Use many different textures and weights of yarn: Wool, mohair, loop, chenile, worsted, bulky, or thick-and-thin yarns all work well together. Include novelty yarns for a bit of interest. Mohair is especially suitable to keep the ruana lightweight. Use fine yarns double. And by all means add some glitz!“
