Your standard garter stitch scarf gets an upgrade with this highly graphic version that looks like knit bricks. The interest comes from the strongly contrasting vertical lines that run perpendicular to the horizontal garter stitch and color striping.

The vertical lines on the garter fabric are not just knit or slip stitches. They are created with the Showy Decrease, a simple modification to a standard decrease that turns it into a decorative element. The stitches rises up on the face of the knit fabric for added dimension.

Note the narrower stripe option at the end of the scarf our dog Domino is wearing. (Our son was back in college before I could ambush him again with another photo request.)
