The inspiration for this design continues the botanical story of the original Ohia Shawl, celebrating the beauty of Hawaiʻi’s native trees through feather-and-fan lace, miniature nupps, and contrasting yarn textures.

Koa Shawl is perfect for pairing a quiet colorway with a companion full of character. The signature V-shaped construction and alternating stitch patterns offer the perfect “just one more row” knitting experience, resulting in an elegant, easy-to-wear shawl. The length can be easily adjusted to suit the available yardage.

Instructions for lace are both charted and written out, and videos for tricky techniques provided.

Yarn

  • Each Color A (cA) and Color B (cB): 437yds / 400m of fingering weight yarn
  • Sample shawl: Butter Sparkle from Seismic Yarn (75% superwash merino, 15% nylon, 10% silver stellina; 3.5oz / 100g, 437yds / 400m) in colors Daydream (cA, variegated pink) and Au Natural (cB, off-white)

Needles

  • US 6 / 4mm needles on a long cable or the size needed to obtain gauge

Gauge

  • 23 sts and 46 rows in 4” / 10cm in Garter Stitch, unblocked
  • 21 sts and 40 rows in 4” / 10cm in Garter Stitch, blocked
  • The gauge is not crucial for this pattern, but it will affect the required yardage and the finished size of the shawl

Size

  • Wingspan (measured straight from tip to tip on the shawl laying flat) 65” / 165cm
  • Depth (measured along the central spine) 21.5” / 55cm
  • The size is adjustable: pattern stripes can be repeated any desired number of times to make a larger or a smaller piece.

Construction

  • The shawl is knit in a V-shape from the top down with increases along the sides and the central spine.

  • The design features stripes in 4 stitch patterns: Garter Stripe, Mini Nupps Stripe, Eyelet Stripe, and Lace Stripe.

  • Depending on the gauge and available yardage, your project may differ in size. Make sure to check your gauge on a blocked swatch if you’d like to get the size and drape similar to the sample. Check the gauge while working, as it often tends to get looser by the end of the project.

  • To adjust the pattern to the available yardage or differences in gauge, increase/decrease the length of a shawl by repeating/skipping some of the stripes.
