This cowl is inspired by the scales of the beautiful koi fish.
The cowl is created using a modular knitting process. Each “scale” is knit individually by picking up stitches along the edges of other scales, giving the appearance of the colorful koi fish. The pattern also incorporates basic crochet button hole loops as part of the finishing process.

Gauge and size are not essential to the outcome of this project.

One 20 stitch full “scale” module measures

  • 3.75 inches (9.5 cm) across
  • 2.0 inches (5.0 cm) tall

Finished size:

  • length: 30 in. (76 cm)
  • width: 8.5 inches (21.5 cm)

Yarn required:

  • Worsted weight yarn with short gradient repeats or several color coordinated solid yarns.
  • 3 balls of Schoppel - Reggae Ombre in colorway #2249 were used. (109 yd, 100 m/50 g. each)

Materials used:

  • US size 8 (5.0 mm) knitting needles
  • US size 6 /G (4.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Four 3/4 inch (2 cm) buttons
