Kristiania

One of my favorite patterns in The Nordic Knitting Primer. It’s found in Chapter 4 that introduces purling in colorwork. I am crazy about this construction. It is a super fun knit. It was inspired by my Great Grandpa Olsen. He immigrated from Norway as a boy, returned to Norway as a young man, and sailed back to America to settle down. I imagine that he wore something like this while he crossed the Atlantic. My grandpa was born in Kristiania. I saw a photo of him when he was a little boy, and the photography had a stamp on the back of the photo that said Kristiania. I imagined that to be a fairytale place. The place where my grandfather skied to school, learned to paint, played with friends, loved with all his heart and had to leave behind. My grandpa taught me to love everything Norwegian- from Grieg to skiing, to never being cold to Fiskeboller and Julekake. When my grandpa was a young father in America, his beloved Kristiania’s name was changed to Oslo. I designed this piece for him.

I hope you love it!
