Two colored cables create wonderful eye-catching pattern. Pick two contrasting colors or use the odd variegated ball of yarn you love but don’t know what to do with it, as one of the colors. The pattern is not recommended for beginners. The knitter should feel comfortable with knitting the cables and following the charted stitch pattern. The cable pattern knits up using just one of the yarn colors at a time.

Knit a set of colorful cabled socks. Find Arella’s two other colorful cabled sock patterns here: Ripe ‘n Ready and Blueberry Clouds Socks.

Help with 5 stitch cables ( from deesnotes’s project page):

5 stitch cables use two cable needles. Main color is held in back and the CC color is held in front. Basically cabling (or rearranging ) first 2 stitches, (placing all 5 stitches back on left needle) and then cable next 3 stitches which become the first 3 stitches, so that stitches 1-5 (5,4,3,2,1) are rearranged to (2,1,3,5,4). For the left cable, the first two stitches are held in front. For the Right cable, the first two stitches are held in back. For both the left and right cables the 4-5th stitches are always crossed in Front of the 3rd stitch. Then all CC stitches are knit and the 3rd stitch in the main color is slipped as if to purl, (or stitches 1,2,4,&5 are knit with CC and 3 is always slip pwyb)

For Left cable with cable needle: Slip two to cn and hold in front, slip 1 (mc) to 2nd cn and hold in back, k2 from left needle, slip 1 (main color from back cn, knit 2 (cc color) from front cn.

For Right cable with cable needle: Slip two to cn and hold in back, slip next (3rd stitch) to second cable needle and hold behind first cn, k2 from left needle (stitches 4&5), slip 1 (main color orig 3rd stitch) from 2nd back cn, knit 2 (cc color, original stitches 2&1) from remaining cn.

For Left cable without cable needle: take right needle and place through back of 3-5th stitch, (pinch first two stitches against right needle) pull left needle out of stitches 1-5th, and put stitch 1&2 back on left needle, put stitches 3-5 back on left needle, now cable original 3-5 stitches (now stitches 1-3) by placing rt needle in front of stitches 4&5 (now 2 &3), pinch 3rd stitch against right needle and remove left needle from the original 3-5 stitches, place loose 3rd stitch back on left needle then place stitches 4 & 5 back on left needle. knit two stitches, slip 1, and knit two.

For Right cable without cable needle: take rt needle and place through front of 3-5th stitch, (pinch first two stitches against rt needle) pull left needle out of stitches 1-5th, and put loose stitches 2&1 back on left needle, now place original 5-3 stitches back on the left needle, Now cable original stitches 5-3 by placing rt needle in front of stitches 4&5 (now 2&3), pinch against right needle and remove left needle from the original 3-5 stitches , place loose 3rd stitches back on left needle then place stitches 4 & 5 back on left needle. knit 2 stitches, slip 1 pwyif, knit 2 stitches.
