A cushy scarf in a very basic lace pattern (English Mesh Lace pattern from Barbara G. Walker’s A Treasury of Knitting Patterns) with garter stitch trim. Beautiful in kettle dyed or variegated yarns but the specific lace work can get lost. Solids in lighter colors will show lace work more. You choose! The bulky yarn makes a soft, textured wrap that you can work up quickly.

Materials:
2 hanks Malabrigo Mecha Kettle dyed bulky superwash yarn--color 066 Lavanda (130 yds per hank)
www.malabrigoyarn.com (buy more yarn if you want a longer scarf)
US 10.5 needles or size to make gauge—I used bamboo straight needles
2 stitch markers
Darning needle
Scissors

Gauge:
Stitch gauge is 15 sts to 4 inches
Row gauge may vary—you will knit to a length that pleases you. Buy more yarn if you think you’ll make a longer scarf.
My sample finished at 8 inches wide by 50 inches long—just off the needles not soaked or pinned.

Notes:
Using long tail cast on or other firm cast on—leave a 6 inch tail to weave in when finishing.

Life lines really help when you’re learning a new technique—especially lace which is hard to un-knit. Consider placing a lifeline after you complete a successful repeat and place it after you finish a WS row.

I didn’t soak or pin out my scarf, just used it off the needles. The garter edge along the length turns in but I like that organic look and think it adds to the texture and fullness.

Lace knitting’s finished look depends on working stitches a certain way so they lay correctly to create the expected textures. Make sure you don’t twist stitches. Work the stitches in the pattern just as directed. Here’s a video on twisted stitches https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plieeghzbH4

If you want a wider or narrower scarf change the number of repeats-- the lace pattern is worked on multiples of 6 plus 1. In this pattern it is 25 stitches (6 X 4 = 24 plus 1 = 25) then the garter edge is added on.
