Lacewing was our very first design, and it’s still one of the quickest ways to get a beautiful scarf on your needles. Worked flat on the bias, it pairs simple faux cables with three panels of chevron lace for texture that looks intricate but becomes easy to follow after a few repeats.

The diagonal fabric creates natural drape so it wraps comfortably without bulk. It only takes two skeins of fingering weight yarn, making it a perfect project for a special yarn you’ve been saving.

Add fringe or leave it clean finished, either way it’s an easy everyday piece you’ll reach for often.

Written and charted instructions are included.

Design Details

Lacewing combines a faux cable rib texture with three chevron lace panels. The faux cables are worked without a cable needle, and the lace uses simple yarnovers and decreases, so the fabric looks detailed while staying approachable to knit.

The bias construction helps the scarf sit naturally around the neck and creates its finished length as you knit.

Pattern Highlights

  • Repetitive and easy to memorize
  • Faux cables worked without a cable needle
  • Lightweight fabric with natural drape
  • Low yardage project using two skeins
  • Optional fringe finish

Construction Overview

Lacewing is worked flat on the bias using increases and decreases along the edges to shape the scarf.

The stitch pattern combines faux cable ribbing with chevron lace panels. As the scarf grows, the diagonal shaping creates the finished length and drape.

Yarn Notes

We knit our sample in Qing Fibre Merino Single, a soft fingering weight yarn with gentle drape that lets the lace open beautifully after blocking while keeping the texture clear.

Yardage: approximately 800 yards total (2 skeins)

Any fingering weight yarn with good stitch definition will work well for this pattern.
