While we generally think of mittens as a knitted garment, there are multiple period patterns for crochet mittens and gloves in American and European publications. Most period mitten and
glove patterns for ladies are fingerless and are made with either wool or silk yarn. Open work such as this glove and Tunisian seems to be the most common style for crochet glove patterns
during this time period.

The silk is about equally as warm as using wool; it just has a different look. Naturally, silk would have been more expensive and fashionable. So, feel free to make this glove in wool; the original pattern even states that you can. However, it should be made with lace-weight yarn. Before you yank out the cotton, keep in mind that is not a period option, and it will not have the same stretch or drape as silk or wool. The beautiful vintage white cotton lacey gloves that we see are characteristic of 1920s to 1950s fashion.

This is not meant to be an oversized item; it is supposed to fit like a glove! If you intend to make this an over-glove for kids’ leather mitts, then it can be a little bigger, but try to keep this snug for a fashionable look.
