The goal in designing this shawl was to use two skeins of fingering yarn (ca. 200 g/800 m of yarn) and end up with a large enough piece to wrap around your shoulders. By adding a lot of air between the stitches, two skeins of fingering yarn can be stretched into a shawl that has a 6 foot wingspan and is a couple of feet deep at the point. The shawl is sized to use up most of the yarn yet not run out before the end. If you want an even bigger shawl, buy more yarn!

This shawl is worked from end to end, with an attached i-cord at the top, and stitches added then removed between the i-cord and the body of the shawl. The point is formed by short rows. The body of the shawl is worked in ladder lace, with double increases framed by single decreases.

Yarn: 2 skeins of Hedgehog Fibres Sock or similar fingering weight yarn. Shown in Hedgehog Fibers Pucker and Jelly colorways.

Finished Dimensions: 180 cm (72 in) from end to end and 65 cm (26 in) deep after blocking

Needles: US 3 (3.25 mm) needles for most yarn. Knit a swatch to make sure you like the feel of the fabric. Some fingering yarn is noticeably thinner than others and smaller needles may be more appropriate. The shawl is worked flat, and the number of stitches does not get very large, so it can be worked on straight needles if desired.

Notes on Construction
This construction method requires only 4 stitches to be cast on at the beginning of the work, and 4 stitches to be cast off at the other end. The i-cord at the beginning is the trunk from which the body of the shawl grows.
