Lady Mara rules in my all-time favorite fantasty series - the Mistress of the Empire trilogy by Raymond E. Feist and Janny Wurts. Dark magic, political murder, rival houses - it’s a story full of twists and turns, complex relationships and strategic survival. Love it!

So this hat is in her honor. The brim treatment twists and turns through several multi-length cables before moving into a calmer stockinette section. Fortunately, the complexities aren’t as life-threatening as those faced by Mara!

The pattern is written out, but also includes charted directions for the cable section in the brim. This is the only part of the pattern that is charted.

The hat is 18” finished width to fit heads in the 20”-23” range. I’ve only included one size, but tips for making the hat bigger or smaller are included. The hat should be made with negative ease to show the cables off to best effect.

The sample hat took all but nine yards of a skein of Cascade 220 Superwash Sport.
