Laima is the Latvian goddess of fate. Together with the two deities of Latvian mythology, Dievs, (the sky), and Saule, (the sun), Laima determines the length and fortune of human life.

Her symbol, a row of arrows, is believed to be the oldest of the Latvian ethnic symbols and is found on Stone Age jewellery and artifacts. It is commonly incorporated into knitted and woven garments to confer happiness and good fortune onto the wearer.

The lace pattern in the Laima cowl is the sign of Laima. May it inspire happiness and good fortune for both the knitter and the wearer!
