Worked flat from the left corner to the right, this shawl increases to the center point along the bottom edge, then decreases to the right corner, giving it an elongated kerchief shape. It features variations of three textured stitches: long-slip, mosaic, and pebble stitch, as well as an i-cord edge and bind-off for a tidy, finished look.
Designed with local shops in mind, the suggested gauge of this pattern is flexible, inviting you to visit your local yarn store and find a fabulous fingering-weight yarn made near you!

Difficulty: Intermediate. This knit may be slightly challenging for beginner knitters, but it’s definitely doable. It’s a great project for learning a few simple new skills beyond knits and purls.

Yarn: In honor of Local Yarn Store Day 2025, this pattern invites knitters to find a fingering/sock yarn that is local to them. For the sample, I used “Lake Effect” by Shannon from Oliver’s Originals in Manlius, New York.

LOCAL YARN STORE DAY 2025:
In a world with fast delivery options and big-box stores, it can be easy, and sometimes necessary, to shop with convenience and bargain prices in mind. But when it comes to crafting, there is such an untapped community of small business owners working hard to provide their customers with quality over quantity, attentiveness over speed, and a place for community, where crafters can be welcomed in the spirit of friendship.

This year, I’m thrilled to be offering up this pattern in collaboration with Shannon Oliver of Oliver’s Originals, using her new yarn line, Lake Effect—named in honor of our local weather!

Oliver’s Originals is a fiber arts and gift shop in Manlius, New York that offers classes, notions, yarn, and most importantly, a place for fiber artists to come together and connect. For more information, you can visit Shannon’s website: oliversoriginals1.com or stop in and say, “Hi!”

ERRATA: Update 4/18/25. If you bought the original pattern, please note an edit on page 5, Section 2: Row 7. sl1 wyif, K1 should be sl1 wyib, K1. The PDF has been updated to reflect this change.
