This is my first hat! Designed to compliment my Lanercost Cowls and based on the same colour scheme, inspired by Lanercost Priory in Cumbria, close to Hadrian’s wall.

Once you have purchased the wool for it, it is likely that you will have enough wool for a hat and a cowl!

It is knitted in the round, with a corrugated rib to start with. It could be knitted with a plain rib instead, but the corrugated rib gives a snugger fit.

My design follows many of the elements of traditional Fair Isle, with a fine needle and wool, repeating motifs (Scandinavian in origin), and colours of body reflected in the crown.

The rib and body of the hat can be knit on a 60 cm circular needle, or on double pointed needles. It is recommended that you switch to double pointed needles to knit the crown. If you prefer to knit with magic loop, you can knit the entire hat using a long circular.
