Hanukkah crochet patterns are hard to find so, every year, I try to design a new pattern or two for the holiday. This year, I’m quite pleased with my new Large Hanukkah Menorah crochet pattern. It has an interesting stitch pattern and is fun to make and see it take shape. It’s perfect as a wall hanging or decoration, a placemat or a table decoration.

Once you are familiar with the stitches used, I think you’ll find that it works up fairly quickly. Before hanging, it measures about 16” tall and 13” across.

Instructions are included for making a wall hanging using a dowel and either jute, ribbon, or yarn. Don’t let the wall hanging instructions scare you off. Hanging is optional and there are other ways you can hang this without using a dowel if that part is concerning. If you do use a dowel, they are available inexpensively at the big box craft stores. If you need to cut the dowel, they cut pretty easily with a small hand-held hacksaw – JUST BE VERY CAREFUL!

I used Red Heart Super Saver which comes in 364 yard skeins. I love Red Heart Super Saver for craft project as it is inexpensive, durable, keeps its shape and comes in just about every color under the sun. 1 skein of each of the 3 colors should be enough to make 5 or 6 Hanukkah Menorahs. Make at least one for your own holiday décor and consider making several to give as gifts.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

G Crochet Hook (see note on gauge)

Worsted Weight Yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver in Blue Suede (#3945) (40 yards), Light Periwinkle(#0347) (30 Yards) and Gold (#0321)(8 yards). Yardage is approximate. If you need to substitute yarn, any worsted weight yarn should work but I would avoid cotton yarn or very soft yarn (too floppy and doesn’t keep its shape well for something this large) and try to use an acrylic, wool, or blend. (Note: I think this would also look great in Blue Suede and White)

Tapestry Needle to attach pieces and weave in ends.

Stitch markers (optional but highly recommended).

For Wall Hanging (optional):

Dowel – about 3/8 diameter, up to 3 foot length to be cut.

Jute - 3 Yards (Yarn or Ribbon can be substituted for Jute)

Yarn - 3 yards of Blue Suede and 1 yard of Light Periwinkle

Craft Glue (optional - to secure the Jute to the Dowel if preferred – note: I did not use glue and the knotted jute holds just fine)

Sandpaper or heavy duty file to smooth rough cut edge of dowel.

SKILL LEVEL: Beginner but some experience helpful. While I strive for my patterns to be very clear and easy to follow, this is probably not a suitable pattern for a first time crocheter. However, if you have some experience with shaping, color changes, and sewing pieces together, you shouldn’t have any problem with this pattern. And, I’m always happy to answer questions!

GAUGE: Gauge is not important for this project. After R1 and R2 the work should measure about 2” across. Each 2 Rounds of 1 color adds about 1 3/8” inches measuring vertically and about 2 ¾” measuring across. Your gauge may differ, and you may want to adjust your hook size depending on how you crochet and whether you use a different type of yarn.
