Larix Shawl is an experiment on traditional triangle shawl shaping. I aimed to create an almost diamond shape shawl such that the top point (cast-on) can be worn folded over the body of the shawl, and both sides of the shawl can be seen when worn. Two-color Brioche creates such a beautiful reversible stitch pattern that I wanted to highlight. Combined with the wide wing-span, it wraps easily around the neck, with the body of the shawl draping the chest and shoulders

I love combining two-color garter and brioche stitch knitting techniques. These stitch patterns combine to create a piece that appears to be woven, not knitted.

I find that the straightforward hand knits are my most worn garments. The hand knits that I find pleasant, easy, and comfortable to make I also find pleasant, easy, and comfortable to wear. This shawl design is just that. Visually, it is highlighted by brioche columns to appear as rays coming from the spine.

Since this shawl is smaller in size, it can be tied in the back or front using the wing tips of the shawl or held on with a shawl clip.

Pattern Notes:
The Larix Shawl is knit from the top down beginning with a Garter Tab Cast-On. This shawl is worked back and forth utilizing soothing garter stitch and fun two-color brioche in fingering weight yarn. Garter stitch is used to create the background of the shawl and two-color brioche is incorporated to mimic rays coming from the spine. DK weight yarn is used in the border of this shawl to add continued textured interest throughout the shawl. Garter is continued in the border and finished with a stretchy bind-off. Increases are made on the wingspan and center spine to create the diamond/triangle shape.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate

Skills needed are: Garter-Tab Cast-On, two-color garter stitch, basic two-color brioche (brk/brp/sl1yo), basic increase and shawl shaping, working a large amount of stitches flat & Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off.

Materials:
Fingering weight yarn & DK weight yarn

Yardage/Meterage Needed
Important Note: Yardage/meterage used is dependent on matching your gauge to pattern. Yardage/meterage given above is for the shawl only, swatch not included. All skeins were used almost completely. The skeins used in this sample had more grams than listed on the label. Each skein was used almost to completion to really maximize the size of shawl and yardage used. If you want a larger shawl, you will need to purchase more yarn. Notes are given throughout the pattern to guide if yarn is running low.
