Laura Scarf
Laura Scarf launch discount - 10% off with code LAURALAUNCH10 until 31st October 2025
The Laura scarf is all about embracing gingham during the colder months of the year, using blown or unspun yarns to create a light-weight but warm scarf to keep you cozy during autumn and winter. I was completely inspired by my good friend Laura Penrose, and her love of all things gingham when creating this design.
Construction
Starting with Judy’s magic cast on, this scarf is knitted bottom up, working in the round in stockinette stitch, following a charted stitch pattern to create the gingham-effect fabric. The end is then grafted closed using Kitchener stitch. The stitch pattern is worked using stranded colourwork where two colours are used at the same time – catching floats is advised.
Sizes
One - though can be adapted to any length - see below
Measurements
Width: Approx. 14cm
Length: Approx. 180cm
Yarn
2 complementing colours in either a blown or unspun yarn. A minimum allowance of 300m in each colour is recommended.
Sample 1 (green & white):
Drops Air 50g/150m - 65% Alpaca, 28% Polyamide, 7% Wool.
(100g/300m/2 balls of each colour – 4 balls in total).
Scarf length – approx. 180cm / 26.5 chart repeats.
Sample 2 (pink & white): Yarn Smiths Pebble Haze Aran 50g/100m - 67% Cotton, 33% Acrylic.
(150g/300m/3 balls of each colour – 6 balls in total).
Scarf length – approx. 172cm / 25.5 chart repeats.
Given yarn amounts are to make one Scarf to width and length stated above.
(Please note, the yarn packs of Yarn Smiths Pebble Haze, available from Wool Warehouse, contain 4 balls of each colour so that you can knit your scarf to 180cm or longer if desired).
Needles
5.5mm circular needles with both a 40cm and 100cm cable (or needles to obtain gauge and work in the round /cast-on/bind-off techniques).
Gauge
Approx. 18sts x 18rds = 10x10cm in stockinette stitch colourwork in the round, blocked.
See below for further information.
Notions
1 ring and 1 locking stitch marker, scissors, and a tapestry needle.
Skills Used
Judy’s magic cast on, stranded colourwork in the round, catching floats, grafted bind off.
Though the Laura scarf can theoretically be knitted with any yarn at any gauge, it is highly recommended that you work using a lightweight worsted to aran weight yarn such as a blown or unspun one whilst working at a gauge as close as possible to that given in the pattern. This scarf is designed to be light and fluffy, yet warm, so using yarns other than those recommended could result in a heavy, stiff fabric – please keep this in mind if you wish to work with an alternative.
I used Drops Air for the first sample. For its weight in grams, as an aran weight yarn, it goes a long way, so again, keep this is mind when making yarn choices and buying enough yarn – don’t just go by the number of balls I used. For my second sample, I used Yarnsmiths Pebble Haze Aran, which knits up at the same gauge on the same size needles as sample one, but doesn’t “go as far” per ball of yarn, so again bear this in mind when searching for yarn – look at the weight in grams versus length of the yarn carefully – ideally you need a minimum of 300m of each colour of yarn for this scarf.
To knit this scarf to 180cm in the Yarnsmiths Pebble Haze Aran, you will need 4 balls of each colour, but this will leave you with a fair amount a leftover yarn - though you could also just make your scarf longer.
It is also highly recommended that you gauge swatch for this design. It’s a great way of finding out if you like the fabric you are creating, and a tool you can use to work out if you will have enough yarn to complete your scarf to the length and width you wish to achieve.
