Knit in the round, mitten construction includes a cuff, thumb gusset, joining the thumb with the body, finishing the body (because it sort of magically gets constructed while you’re busy building the thumb), and then picking up stitches to finish the thumb. It’s the same construction for a fingerless mitt or a closed-top mitten – you get to decide what you build. Want a longer cuff? Longer mitten body? Shorter thumb? You can make your own mods with this basic set of instructions.

This workshop’s pattern includes instructions for a warm and dense adult mitt (two strands of bulky yarn) or smaller-size child’s mitt (one strand of bulky yarn).
