Gauge is not important; drape, on the other hand, is what you want to look for when you knit your swatch. Knit Chart A to get an idea if you have a nice drape, and either continue knitting the pattern, or try again. This shawl can be knit in most weights, though if using a thicker weight, like a DK, know that the top edge may take more yarn than a quarter skein.
