The cabled ribbing gives the hat a lot of drama for a very little bit of extra work. The cable is as basic as it gets. The hats are all similar but each version is achieved with different techniques. The ones in this pattern are for bulky machines. Other gauges are given as the chapter progresses. The hats vary from super-simple to more involved. Every single hat makes use of a simple 1 X 1 cable. This is a great project for new knitters to use to get comfortable with cables and gradually advancing knitting techniques. Feel free to mix and match cast-ons and crowns as you get comfortable with the techniques. Very few are specific to a particular hat. The assortment is given so that you get comfortable with many techniques, explore their looks and function, and learn which ones work best for you.

Versions for bulky, mid-gauge and standard machines are given. Measurements are very similar for all versions but there are slight variations based on the mathematics of each gauge. A ribber is helpful but a single bed version is provided, too. Human head sizes run from 9-12” for preemies, 14-16 for babies, 16-18 for toddlers, 18-20 for children, 20-22 for tweens, 21-23 for women, 22-24 for men. It is always best to measure the intended wearer if possible but if it is not, these norms can help in selecting the size to knit. The stockinette portions of the hats finish to 1214, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24
