Learn to crochet a 3D flower granny square perfect for so many projects, like a blanket, tote bag, sweater, cardigan and more with this free crochet pattern and video tutorial.

The video tutorial reflects the 2022 version. As mentioned in the Pattern Notes section, in August of 2026, I adjusted some parts of the pattern.

Materials:

• 32 Yards of Worsted Weight #4 Yarn in Total -- that’s about 14 Yards of the Flower color, 9 Yards of the Leaf color and 9 Yards of the Background color
• H8/5mm Crochet Hook
• Tapestry Needle & Scissors

Yarn Talk:
My original squares with the bright blue center were worked using Red Heart Super Saver in the Soft White, Turqua and Tea Leaf colorways. In working my video tutorial in 2022, I used WeCrochet Dishie Yarn in the Azure, Honeydew and Swan colorways for that sample.

In the August 2026 update, I wanted to make more flower squares in Fall colors for more of a Mum vibe and test out different weight yarns, and in doing so, I’ve made samples in Lion Brand Color Theory in the Canyon, Caper and Satellite colorways, Lion Brand Hue + Me in the Mustard, Juniper and Salt colorways and Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick in the Potion and Barley colorways.

There is a lot of flexibility when it comes to choosing a yarn for a crocheted square, mostly guided by how you will use it, and I’ll give some examples:

On it’s own, there are lots of great ways to use a crocheted square:

• You can add a dowel to the top to create a wall hanging or attach the square to a canvas to make wall art, and with these projects, you can use any fiber desired.
• If you wanted to use the square as a washcloth, you’ll want to grab a 100% cotton, or a blend of cotton, linen and/or bamboo.
• To use the square as a trivet, definitely reach for either a 100% cotton or 100% wool to protect your surface.
• The holes on this square are too loose to use as a hot pad without adding layers.

Make several squares and sew them together:

• To use the squares to make a purse or tote bag, 100% cotton is my go-to as it’s the most durable. I like to make mine to fit a pre-made canvas tote bag so I can use the canvas bag as a lining without having to sew my own. If you do not line your bag, it will stretch regardless of the yarn you choose.
• To crochet the squares into a wearable, like an oversized scarf, a rectangle shawl, a poncho or a sweater, I love cotton blends, like Berroco Modern Cotton or Lion Coboo for warmer weather, and wool blends, like Lion Brand Wool Ease and Berroco Vintage, for cooler weather. Acrylic yarns also work well. Keep in mind the more of an animal fiber, the warmer the wearable will be.
• To sew the squares into a home decor piece, like a table runner or blanket, there is a lot of flexibility. For a table runner, my preferred fiber is 100% cotton, but as long as you don’t put anything fresh from the oven directly on top of it, an acrylic blend, like Lion Brand Made with Love The Cottony One, a 100% acrylic yarn or really anything from your stash work well. For a blanket, I lean into cozier and warmer wool blends, like Lion Brand Wool Ease and Berroco Vintage, unless I’m making a lovey, then I like to go with a 100% cotton that is colorfast, since baby will most likely be chewing on it.

If you don’t have worsted weight yarn, you can hold two strands of lightweight yarn together to equal the same thickness, or as I mentioned before, you can use just one strand of any weight yarn with the respective sized crochet hook to work up a smaller or larger square.

Measurements (Diameter):

• Lion Brand Color Theory & H8/5mm Hook: 4 7/8”
• Lion Brand Hue + Me & L11/8mm Hook: 7 7/8” Across
• Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick & M13/9mm Hook: 8 3/4”

If you use an H8/5mm crochet hook and work just 6 rounds with Red Heart Super Saver, the square will be 4 3/4”, and the same hook with WeCrochet Dishie, the square will be 4 7/8”.

Gauge:
Gauge is measured in pattern. Matching my gauge is only essential if you want your square to equal the same exact size as mine. If you combine different yarns in your project, check gauge against yourself so you will know if you need to switch to a smaller or larger crochet hook when switching yarns, as some vary, even if they are the same weight.
