I wanted to create a cowl that would take a beginner knitter from a solid foundation of knitting and a little bit of purling to the next step of adding in slip stitches and then finally adding a combination of slip and purl stitches, in three different versions of the same basic cowl shape. This pattern is suitable for knitters just starting out to those who have been knitting for years!

• Version 1, we start by knitting flat to create a garter edge, then we join in the round and keep knitting to create a smooth stockinette fabric. Finally, while still working in the round, we alternate knit and purl rounds to end with a garter edge.
• Version 2 begins the same as Version 1, but we add in a second color of yarn and incorporate slip stitches to create a textured fabric with a bit more interest. With the addition of the second color yarn, especially if you choose a self-striping yarn, you’ll get a fun, but subtle color changing cowl.
• Version 3 builds on the 2 previous versions by adding purl stitches into the body of the cowl. This creates even more texture to the cowl and adds a bit more complexity to the pattern.
