This sweater is certainly a labour of love and an “heirloom” knit. The motif is the eagle from the Lindisfarne Gospel of St John mirrored and into a fair-isle motif. The sleeves show the same motif, again mirrored left and right. Body and sleeve motifs are surrounded by a Celtic border. Body, sleeves and neckline have simple, yet decorative, picot edge in the base colour.

The sweater construction is a saddle sweater with a two-colour Celtic braid on the shoulders. The garment can be knitted flat in panels and then sewn together or, alternatively, it can actually be knitted seamlessly as in the example on the pictures.

Gauge is really important for this project. You may prefer to use 4-ply yarn to achieve the required gauge. Making a gauge swatch is highly recommended.
