This sweater is a love letter to wooly wool. Lismore Sheep Farm is one of my favourite places to visit every summer when I head to the East Coast. They raise Dorset sheep, which are great for both meat and wool. You can visit their sheep, see educational materials detailing every step of the fleece to wool process and then of course visit their on site wool shop! The yarn is a wooly wool lovers dream, with little bits of vegetable matter throughout (easily picked out) and a nice amount of lanolin left in the wool. This yarn has beautiful stitch definition and a lot of body, perfect to highlight an oversized cozy collar and generous french braid cables.
Sizes
96.5 (106.5, 117, 127, 137, 147.5) 157.5, 167.5, 178, 188 cm / 38 (42, 46, 50, 54, 58) 62, 66, 70, 74”
Sample is shown with about 12” of positive ease.
The sizes are the actual finished measurement of the garment. Select a size that is 9-15” larger than your actual chest measurement to achieve the recommended ease.
Gauge
14 stitches and 20 rows = 10 cm / 4” square in stockinette stitch knit in the round on larger needles after wet blocking.
Recommended Needles
6 mm (US size 10) 40 and 80 cm / 16” and 32” or longer circular needle for body and sleeves.
5 mm (US size 8) 40 and 80 cm / 16” and 32” circular needle for ribbed hem and cuff and collar.
Or size needed to achieve gauge.
Yarn
Your preferred aran/bulky weight yarn to get gauge.
Sample uses Lismore Sheep Farm yarn in “Mulberry”.
100% wool, 113g = 215 yds.
This pattern lends itself well to many wool or wool blend yarns. Look for something with good stitch definition for those cables to pop. If you choose a drapier yarn your collar will not stand up as solidly - which could be a good thing if you prefer that look.
Approximate Yardage:
750 (823, 892, 960, 1052, 1143) 1244, 1335, 1454, 1536 m / 820 (900, 975, 1050, 1150, 1250) 1360, 1460, 1590, 1680 yds
Additional Tools and Materials
Tapestry needle, 2 stitch markers, waste yarn or stitch holder.
