Any yarn will work, I used DK weight and worsted for the two I made. You will need two colors - referred to in the pattern as MC-main color and CC- contrast color

I used small safety eyes for mine, I’m not sure of the size.

No need to cut yarn at the end of stripes, just carry colors over the next strip until you are finished with the CC, then cut that one and tie in the end.
