This is a very attractive and easy sweater and cap for a small baby. The sweater is started at the lower back with sleeves cast on as you go. It is knit all in one piece in stockinette stitch with lines of purl stitches on the right side for accent. It is suitable for either a boy or girl and easy enough for a beginning knitter.

Buttonholes are worked on both sides. This has two advantages. The buttons are sewn on over the buttonholes on the appropriate side for boy or girl. Also, if the sweater is handed down, the buttons can be changed to suit the sex of the next baby. If desired, buttonholes can be worked on just one size and the button bands made plain on the other side.
