“Always be thankful for the little things … even the smallest mountains can hide the most breath-taking views!” Nyki Mack, Collections From The Heart

I’m releasing this shawl pattern at what I suspect is just the beginning of the Coronavirus outbreak and ‘lockdown’ in the UK, and I feel like things are tough already, aren’t they? But you know when you’re having a hard time and then all of a sudden, something happens that makes you stop and appreciate the small things?

It really doesn’t have to be a big thing, for example:

  • It was a sunny day and I was able to hang out washing on the line in the garden: little golden moment.
  • My cats, between whom there’s no love lost, were snuggled-up together on my knitting chair: little golden moment.
  • I spotted a little purple flower growing in a crack in the pavement: little golden moment.

I’m hoping that this shawl design will be a lovely reminder of these small special moments. In fact, that the shawl will become it’s own ‘little golden moment’, as you watch the beautiful patterning unfold.

The pattern includes links to video tutorials for the ‘bump free’ garter tab, the clam stitch and clam stitch cast-off, and includes charts (and equivalent written instructions), photographs, a schematic and has been professionally tech edited and test knitted. All of this will help you to create a shawl that you feel proud of and that is wonderful to wear.

CONSTRUCTION NOTES
This is a crescent-shaped shawl worked from the top down, beginning with a “bump free” garter tab and working down to the cast-off edge. A design using slipped stitch and clam stitch patterns is worked across the shawl on top of a garter st background. Two increases are worked at each edge on every RS row, with additional increases happening across the row when working the clam stitch. A beautiful edging is worked in a few rows of “feather and fan” style lace, followed by an innovative clam stitch cast off.

YARN
Botanical Yarn, British BFL 4ply Wool (4ply / fingering-weight; 400m / 437 yards per 100g skein; 100% Bluefaced Leicester)
1 skein in Alchemilla Mollis (yellow MC)
1 skein in Cotelydon Undulata (grey CC)
It is also possible to use a mohair laceweight yarn in place of CC, at a meterage of approx. 420m to 50g.
Choose two colours with high contrast for best effect.

GAUGE
22 sts x 44 rows = 10 cm / 4” measured over garter & slipped st pattern, before blocking
18 sts x 30 rows = 10 cm / 4” measured over garter & slipped st pattern, after blocking
Please take time to check your gauge, as this will affect how much yarn you use.

NEEDLES & NOTIONS
4.5mm / US 7 circular needle, 80-100 cm (32-40”) long
The shawl is worked flat but a longer circular needle is recommended to avoid the stitches bunching up. 52 stitch markers or small loops of knotted yarn.
