These are simple, sweet little cotton socks – with a nod to my Canadian background - inspired by vintage childhood patterns and designed to keep tiny baby feet warm in breathable cotton (though the pattern can be adapted for any yarn). They also present a nice easy introduction to some colourwork. Unlike most colourwork, this pattern can be knitted using minimal weaving. This is because the turn of the cuff covers any unsightly strands - and keeps them away from snagging little toes when putting the baby’s socks on. They also feature a slip stitch heel for extra strength.

I like to knit socks on one circular needle, using the magic loop method but this pattern can easily be worked your favourite way – on double points, or one or two circulars. To try to be helpful, where it gets tricky, I’ve put down instructions for both Magic Loop and DPNS.
