This boat-neck, long-sleeved pullover sweater is knit from the top (neck) down, and is shaped with raglan sleeves. The sleeves are bracelet length and trimmed with a “mermaid tail” lace pattern. A similar lace pattern interspersed with “seafoam” eyelets decorates the lower half of the body, which ends at high hip length. Minimal finishing completes this sweater. Blocking the lace at the bottom half of the body of the garment more severely will allow for a slight A-line shape. For a trimmer fit, leave this lace only lightly blocked. The sample is knit in size 34 ½” (87.5 cm) and is shown modeled with approximately ½” (1.5 cm) of positive ease.

Inspired by the classic childhood fairy tale, made even more popular by Disney’s version, tells the tale of a young mermaid who longs to be human. While the contemporary telling of this story has a happy ending, the original fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson is much less cheery, with more of a morality tale to be told and a less happy ending.

The lace patterns in the pattern are given in chart form only.

Please note this garment may also be purchased as part of a larger 8-piece collection of women’s sweaters and accessories in Legendary Knits, volume 3.
