This is a PDF knitting pattern for a short-sleeved cardigan and matching hat to fit 18-inch dolls similar to American Girl dolls.

The instructions for this set are written for two colors, but it can be knit using just a single color. The sweater is knit flat back and forth with both knit and purl rows from the neck down using seamless top down construction. The sleeves are placed on holders in order to complete the body. The sleeve stitches are then transferred to the needles and additional stitches are picked up from the underarm. The sleeves are knit in the round using either double pointed needles or the magic loop technique on circular needles. The hat is knit from the bottom up in the round. A right twist stitch is used around the hat band, the sweater neck, sleeve cuffs, and bottom hem.

SKILL: Intermediate. This pattern includes basic knitting techniques as well as the following additional techniques:

  • Knitting in the round on circular needles for magic loop or on double pointed needles. I used the magic loop technique.
  • Using 2 colors in a stripe pattern.
  • Making 1 stitch M1 by lifting the bar of yarn between 2 stitches and knitting into the loop to create a new stitch.
  • Increasing by knitting in the front and back of a stitch kfb.
  • Making buttonholes with yarn over and knit 2 together.
  • Knitting a decorative picot stitch with yarn over, knit 2 together.
  • Knitting a right twist stitch Tw2R explanation is in instructions.
  • Picking up bound off stitches.
  • Knitting 2 stitches together k2tog
  • Knitting an i-cord optional.

MATERIALS:
- Needles: Pair of US #4 (3.5 mm) needles. US #4 (3.5 mm) circular or double point needles for the sleeves and hat (I used magic loop using a circular needle with a 47” cable.) Use the size necessary to obtain correct gauge.

  • Yarn: DK. Use any yarn that will give you a gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rows per 4” (10 cm) in stockinette stitch with US #4 (3.5 mm) needles or a size necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

I used the following yarn for each hat and sweater in the photo, but you may need more or less: Loops and Threads Joy DK available at Michaels: Approximately 145 yards total with approximately 80 yards for the main color and 65 yards for the contrast color.
I also knitted this pattern with Baby Bee Sweet Delight available at Hobby Lobby and it was the same size but less dense than those I knit with Loops and Threads Joy DK.

  • Additional materials: yarn needle for weaving ends, stitch holders or scrap yarn, 6 stitch markers, 4 buttons for button band.

GAUGE:
In stockinette stitch 22 sts x 28 rows = 10 cm/4” with US #4 (3.5 mm) needles or a size necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

The pattern PDF is 9 pages and uses written instructions. This pattern is designed by me and was tested by 6 other knitters prior to publication. This purchase is for a PDF KNITTING PATTERN, not the doll or clothing pictured.

Many thanks to my wonderful testing team, Ann, Diane, Mette, Michele, Penny and Monica for helping me create another successful pattern.
