This is a PDF knitting pattern for a long-sleeved and short-sleeved mock cable cardigan and matching hat to fit 18 inch dolls similar to American Girl dolls.

Using seamless top down construction, the sweater is knit flat back and forth with both knit and purl rows from the neck down. The sleeves are placed on holders in order to complete the body. The sleeve stitches are then transferred to the needles and additional stitches are picked up from the underarm. The sleeves and hat are knit in the round. A mock eyelet cable stitch is used around the hat band, the sweater bottom and the sleeve cuffs and on both sides of the button band.

SKILL: Confident beginner. This pattern includes basic knitting techniques as well as the following additional techniques:

  • Knitting in the round on circular needles or double pointed needles. I used the magic loop technique.
  • Making 1 stitch M1 by lifting the bar of yarn between 2 stitches and knitting into the loop to create a new stitch.
  • Increasing by knitting in the front and back of a stitch kfb.
  • Making buttonholes with yarn over and knit 2 together.
  • Picking up bound off stitches.
  • Knitting 2 stitches together k2tog
  • Slipping a stitch purlwise sl1pw
  • Passing a slipped stitch over another stitch or over several stitches psso
  • Knitting an i-cord.

MATERIALS:

  • Needles: Pair of US 4/3.5 mm needles. US 4/3.5 mm circular or double point needles for the sleeves and hat I used magic loop. Use the size necessary to obtain correct gauge.

  • Yarn: DK/light #3. Use any yarn that will give you a gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rows per 4”/10 cm in stockinette stitch with US 4/3.5 mm needles.
I used the following yarn for the hat and sweater in the photo, but you may need more or less: Bernat Softee Baby 2.9 oz/210yds.

  • Additional materials: yarn needle for weaving ends, stitch holders or scrap yarn, 6 stitch markers, 5 buttons for button band.

GAUGE:
In stockinette stitch 22 sts x 28 rows = 10 cm/4” with US 4/3.5 mm needles or whatever size needles that give you the correct gauge.
