Lizzy the Lemming is part of project Arctic. In Project Arctic I crochet different animals that live on or around the poles. They may live on the ice, in the air or in the water. What makes those animals special, is that many of them have a very different appearance when they’re young compared to when they are grown up. And that is very nice to crochet!

Lemmings are living in the Arctic region. They have a flattened claw at the front feet to dig in the snow. Lizzy eats primarily mosses and grasses but can forage for berries and stuff like that.

In contrast with many other rodents, the lemming does not hide for predators all the time. Instead they tend to behave aggressive towards them and to humans as well.

Lemmings are widely believed to commit mass suicide. There even was a popular computer game in the early nineties in which the player had to save the lemmings from walking from cliffs, in fires and so on. Wikipedia explained that this mass suicide thing is a misconception and that it’s “rather a result of their migratory behavior.” However, although lemmings can swim, if they try to cross a vast water surface, many drown due to their physical limitations to swim the ocean.

Sizes
The lemming will be about 6 cm high, 5 cm wide and 13 cm long.
