I have knitted a lot of socks, and I kept wearing them out on the bottom of my heel. I reknit or darned one pair FOUR times. I decided there had to be a better way… like starting with a stronger heel to begin with. I looked at a lot of patterns and sock books, but they all used slip stitches on the back of the heel and suggested using slip stitches on the bottom of the heel if you need it. I thought, “Great, but how?” I couldn’t find a pattern anywhere, so I figured it out. I never meant to be a designer, but I am guessing there are more people out there who have my problem. So, here I am.

This sock pattern is designed especially for people who wear out the bottom of their heels. It features a center ladder flanked by opposing cables in an easy-to-memorize pattern. The sole has Textured Reinforcement Under the Heel (TRUTH) with an Eye of Partridge pattern. It is knit toe-up and features a gusset heel shaped with short rows. The cuff is completed with my Sufficiently Stretchy Bind-Off. The pattern is written for two-at-a-time knitting, but you can knit them one at a time. In addition to the written instructions, I have included a chart and line-by-line directions for each stitch pattern. I also have added a row tracker and stitch count list so you can keep track of your place more easily.

This pattern is knitted over 60 stitches, which generally fits an average adult or older teenager. You can make it however long you need it to be.

And of course, you can knit it with slip stitches up the back of the heel too, if you need to. Enjoy!
